By train:

If you are coming from London, we recommend taking the train from Euston to Oxenholme (about 2.5 hours) and then hiring a car – there are lots of car hire companies in Kendal or you can join a car club called Co-Wheels and pick up a car at Oxenholme station.  www.co-wheels.org.uk/lakes.  From Oxenholme to Banks Cottage is about a 40 minute drive.

By car:

Post code for sat navs is LA22 9JH. If travelling by car from the South, come off the M6 at junction 36. Follow the A591 to Windermere. Carry on with Lake Windermere on your left towards Ambleside. Just before Ambleside, take the A593, signed Skelwith Bridge. You will come to a fork in the road with the white Skelwith Bridge Hotel in front of you. Fork right towards Elterwater.

Once in Chapel Stile, you will pass the Langdale Hotel on your left, the Wainwright’s Arms pub on your left and the Co-op on your right. Just after the Co-op turn right and after about 50 yards turn left in front of the church. The cottage is the last one on your right. It has a yellow front door with a horse-shoe on it.

Parking

Parking in the village is a bit contentious. You can park opposite the cottage, but make sure you get the car snug against the wall. Otherwise, the slope behind the cottage belongs to us, so this is definitely ‘our’ space. It’s easiest to reverse up and sensible to leave the car in gear as well as leaving the handbrake on!
